SUMMARY:Mass for Shut Outs by Tanya Davis
DESCRIPTION: \nMass for Shut-Outs is a contemporary performance that explores enduring questions through a critical and comedic lens. Loosely referencing the framework of a Catholic mass, it is a poetic take on Sunday service, with orature, music, and opportunities for audience participation (no pressure!). \nWritten and performed by PEI Poet Laureate Tanya Davis, with musical support from Carlie Howell, Mass for Shut-Outs features verse dressed as prayer, monologue mimicking homily, joyful singalong, and sombre reflection. It is designed for those of us on the spiritual fringes, who also seek meaning and connection, even while being historically shut out of—or disinterested in—traditional communities of faith, their liturgy, and their institutions. Mass for Shut-Outs is a shout out to anyone grappling with the complexity of faith, the inconsistency of awe, and the politics of organized religion. It is for atheists seeking connection, agnostics asking questions, and believers kindly curious about other people’s gods.\nMass for Shut-Outs will be followed by a reception in St.Mary’s pavilion.\nClick here for more information! She has released 4 records and two books, including How to be Alone, a collaboration with filmmaker Andrea Dorfman. In 2020, also with Dorfman, she released a follow up videopoem called How to be at Home, produced by the NFB as a response to the pandemic. Tanya is a past Poet Laureate of Halifax Nova Scotia and was an Artist-in-Residence at Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Medicine. She collaborates frequently across artistic genre, writing for theatre and film as well as live and recorded music. Tanya is the current Poet Laureate of Prince Edward Island.\n\nMass for Shut-Outs est un spectacle contemporain qui explore des questions persistantes sous un angle critique et comique. Se référant vaguement au cadre d’une messe catholique, il s’agit d’un point de vue poétique sur le service du dimanche, avec de l’orature, de la musique et des possibilités de participation du public ( sans pression !).\nÉcrite et interprétée par Tanya Davis, poète lauréate de l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard, avec le soutien musical de Carlie Howell, Mass for Shut-Outs comprend des vers habillés en prière, un monologue imitant l’homélie, un chant joyeux et une sombre réflexion. Elle est conçue pour ceux d’entre nous qui sont en marge de la spiritualité, qui cherchent également un sens et un lien, même s’ils sont historiquement exclus des communautés de foi traditionnelles, de leur liturgie et de leurs institutions, ou s’en désintéressent.
