Kataqanek

March 15, 2022 by Noelle Pettipas

Under the Spire presents some of the best and diverse music on PEI, and does so on the traditional and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq and L’nu.

Did you know the river for which Indian River is named is one of the best eel fishing spots on the Island? This particular place in Mi’kma’ki is called Kataqanek, which means ‘at the place connected to eels.’ Mi’kmaq have fished eels in this area for centuries, and still do to this day! It is a proud part of the history of the area, and one which we are grateful to learn more about. Recently, L’nuey PEI has started a campaign to identify and mark the Mi’kmaq names of different areas across the island. They have even recorded how to pronounce the names through videos available on their website and social media.

Check out how to pronounce Kataqanek here!

We respect the history, spirituality, and culture of the Indigenous communities on Epekwitk, the traditional name for PEI, as well as across Turtle Island. We feel it’s important to identify the land we occupy to express gratitude to all First Nations people who reside here, and to honour the Indigenous people who have lived and worked on this land historically and presently.

Looking to find out more information and history about the Mi’kmaq names for different areas on our Island? Check out L’nuey PEI for more resources and information!
