Award Purpose
The Robert Kortgaard Award for Youth Musical Excellence celebrates and supports an outstanding Atlantic Canadian youth musician who has demonstrated exceptional talent and dedication in their musical pursuits. This award honors the legacy of Robert Kortgaard’s transformative impact on Under the Spire and its commitment to young, emerging artists.
Award Overview
Each year, one deserving youth artist who performs at the annual Youth Legacy Concert will be selected for the award, offering them a unique and comprehensive package of performance opportunity and mentorship. Through collaboration with Under the Spire, the award recipient will gain exposure, skill development, and professional experience that will enhance their musical journey.
Key Features of the Award:
- Performance Opportunities. The award recipient will be offered a performance opportunity within the venue of Historic St. Mary’s, ideally within 2 years of winning the award.
- Mentorship and Coaching. Award recipients will receive guidance from an established musician, providing personalized advice and support to nurture their talent.
- Visual Recognition. The award winner will be prominently recognized at Historic St. Mary’s, a venue renowned for its acoustics and cultural significance. This recognition highlights their achievement and contribution to the musical community.
Please note: All youth who perform in the annual Youth Legacy Concert will not only be considered for the Robert Kortgaard Award, but they will also receive an honorarium in recognition of their performance and contribution. Beyond the Youth Legacy Concert, participants will also have the opportunity to be added to an Under The Spire Youth Directory and may be invited to perform at community events organized by Under the Spire. These events will further expand the performance portfolios of young musicians as well as connect them with wider audience.

Robert Kortgaard’s impact on Under the Spire has been monumental. Over his 25-year tenure as Artistic Director, he elevated the organization to a nationally recognized and CBC-streamed concert series. His dedication to fostering young, emerging talent was a cornerstone of his approach, providing opportunities for youth to perform in a professional environment and learn from seasoned artists. The creation of the Robert Kortgaard Award for Youth Musical Excellence ensures that his legacy of mentorship, excellence, and community-building continues for years to come.
Eligibility
- Must be based in Atlantic Canada
- Must be an emerging musician. Professional artists (or artists who attribute more than 25% of their income from music) are not eligible
- Must be actively pursuing musical studies or have plans to pursue a career in music
- Must be under the age of 25
