Joel Plaskett returns to the St. Mary’s Stage
We are so pleased to welcome Joel Plaskett back to St. Mary’s on June 28th at 7:30PM. From rocking Halifax’s Marquee Club to performing for the masses at Massey Hall or touring the country with his father, Joel Plaskett has forged a reputation as one of Canada’s most engaging performers and respected singer-songwriters. Plaskett’s songs are a perennial part of the national playlist, a fixture on “best of” lists, and the soundtrack to the lives of faithful fans across the country and around the world. His accolades over a quarter century include a Juno, numerous East Coast Music, Canadian Folk and Music Nova Scotia awards, and two Polaris short list nominations. Plaskett’s new project, 44, is his most detailed musical weave yet. A sprawling box set comprising four, 11-song albums connected visually and thematically, at its heart 44 is an imaginative rumination on trying to slow down and grow up in a rapidly accelerating world.
Welcoming Classical Pianist Philip Chiu
Musical excellence and entertainment continues on June 30th at 3PM as we welcome pianist Philip Chiu to Under the Spire. Winner of the 2023 JUNO award for Solo Classical Album of the Year, Canadian pianist Philip Chiu offers pianistic brilliance, engaging storytelling, and a welcoming stage presence that favors openness, authenticity, and connection with audiences. Described as “a pianist-painter who transforms each musical idea into a beautiful array of colors” (La Presse), Philip has become one of Canada’s leading musicians through his infectious love of music and passion for creation and communication. Philip concertizes extensively as soloist and chamber musician and has performed solo recitals, concerti and chamber music concerts in most major venues across Canada, as well as in France, Japan and the United States. Chamber music partners have included James Ehnes, Emmanuel Pahud, Regis Pasquier, Noah Bendix-Balgley, Bomsori Kim, Johannes Moser, and the New Orford String Quartet; he also has a long-standing violin-piano duo with Jonathan Crow. Philip is a veteran touring artist of Prairie Debut, Jeunesses Musicales Canada, and Debut Atlantic, having toured the country 14 times with their generous support. Philip’s program includes elements of fairytale and whimsy, and features works from Liszt and Ravel, among other classical composers
