August 9th-12th Weekly Update

August 8, 2023 by Noelle Pettipas

Tickets are available here, or by contacting our box office! Historic St. Mary’s is located at 1374 Hamilton Road. The box office is open Tuesday through Sunday, 12PM-5PM.

On August 9th: The first edition of our Island Proud series kicks off. Under the Spire’s Island Proud series exists to highlight incredible island talent. The August 9th edition sees Joce Reyome and the Pierce Clarke Band take to the stage. Joce Reyome is originally from Massachusetts, but now lives on PEI where they are expanding their skills as a musician. They have toured internationally as a session player, and have collaborated on recordings for various East Coast musicians. Joce’s inspiration for songwriting comes from the likes of Aretha Franklin and Janis Joplin, and wants to bring old school vibes into the 21st century. PEI native Pierce Clarke is passionate about songwriting and performing, combining elements of influence from previous eras with his fresh new voice. He graduated from the prestigious Berkeley College in Boston, and continues his career performing across North America with the goal of telling universal stories through his music.

On August 10th: Kaia Kater is a Grenadian-Canadian folk musician who has amassed international acclaim. Her old-time banjo picking, songwriting skills and musical arrangements have earned her praise from outlets such as NPR, CBC Radio, BBC Music and Rolling Stone. Kaia’s first music release came in 2013, and she has since released three full-length albums. Her second album Nine Pin (2015) took inspiration from the Black Lives Matter movement. This album won her a Canadian Folk Music Award, a Stringray Music Award, and sent her on an 18-month tour from Ireland to Iowa. Her most recent album, Grenades (2018) was nominated for Juno’s Contemporary Roots Album of the Year in 2019 and long-listed for a Polaris prize.

On August 11th: Under the Spire has the honour of hosting a tribute to Gordon Lightfoot. Lightfoot was a Canadian icon, folk music legend, and another musician who was lost too soon. His timeless, expert songwriting will live on in the hearts of Canadians for decades to come. Sundown: The Songs of Gordon Lightfoot exists to celebrate his legacy and enjoy his music once again. Curated by Alicia Toner, herself and musician friends Shane Pendergast, Meaghan Blanchard and Nick Doneff will deliver an evening of his music.

On August 12th: The North Sound is a country duo from Saskatchewan. It consists of partners Forrest Eaglespeaker and Nevada Freistadt. The North Sound was originally formed by Eaglespeaker in 2014 as a way to connect to his Blackfoot heritage and share the culture from Treaty 7 Territory.  The band’s music is a mix of modern industry production techniques, and storytelling techniques inspired by great storytellers. The North Sound is signed to Indigenous independent record label New Sun Music based out of Nashville, Tennessee. They won Sask Music’s Indigenous Artist of the Year in 2020, and has received multiple nominations from the Saskatchewan Country Music Association.
