June 22 & 23 Weekly Update: Halifax Gay Men’s Chorus and Mass for Shut-Outs by Tanya Davis

June 17, 2024 by Noelle Pettipas

Halifax Gay Men’s Chorus

Our season kicks off on June 22nd at 7:30PM. In five short years, the Halifax Gay Men’s Chorus (HGMC) has established itself as one of Atlantic Canada’s most dynamic choral groups, performing broad and exciting repertoire infused with the fun and fellowship shared amongst its lower voiced, 2SLGBTQIA+ singers. With a membership of 80 singers, HGMC, which regularly sells out its multi-night concert series, has captured significant attention in Nova Scotia and an audience in the thousands, with its combination of meaningful song choices, challenging arrangements and cheeky, flamboyant camp. Their performance at Under the Spire will feature a variety of their favorite genres, including pop, rock, musicals, classical and choral, including numerous hits from their 2024 concert series ‘Pride Anthems: You Are Beautiful.’

Mass for Shut-Outs

Tanya Davis’ Mass for Shut-Outs takes place on June 23rd at 2PM, with a reception in our PCU pavilion following the performance. This is a contemporary performance that explores enduring questions through a critical and comedic lens. Loosely referencing the framework of a Catholic mass, it is a poetic take on Sunday service, with orature, music, and opportunities for audience participation. Written and performed by PEI Poet Laureate Tanya Davis, with musical support from Carlie Howell, Mass for Shut-Outs features verse dressed as prayer, monologue mimicking homily, joyful singalong, and somber reflection. It is designed for those of us on the spiritual fringes, who also seek meaning and connection, even while being historically shut out of—or disinterested in—traditional communities of faith, their liturgy, and their institutions. Mass for Shut-Outs is a shout out to anyone grappling with the complexity of faith, the inconsistency of awe, and the politics of organized religion. It is for atheists seeking connection, agnostics asking questions, and believers kindly curious about other people’s gods. Mass for Shut-Outs will be followed by a reception with an invitation for all audience members to join Tanya, Carlie, and UTS staff for refreshments in the pavilion. The proceeds gathered from this pay-what-you-can event will be donated to PEERS Alliance.
