The Once
We are so pleased to have The Once coming and performing on the historic St. Mary’s stage on July 19th! Newfoundland has a storied history of stunning songwriters, poets, and players. Over the course of the last decade, The Once Have writ and knit themselves into that story.
Within the nine songs on their new album Time Enough, The Once offer some of the most vulnerable and honest material of their career. The up-tempo album opener, “I Can’t Live Without You”, reflects on women battling with self-image issues and offers wisened words to be the positive change in their own lives. The gritty guitar drive “Before The Fall” succumbs to the notion that we must accept our past and use those memories to grow. Riff rocker “Any Other Way” reflects the fact that true love accepts us at our worst but insists we do the work to be our best selves to keep it together.
On this, their fourth studio album, the band stays true to the root strength of their harmony driven sound, while extending the borders into fresh yet familiar territory. They craft a sonically understated, but emotionally fulsome sound that accomplishes what they’ve always done so well: stun listeners with what Amelia Curran calls “perfect vocal harmonies, thick enough to stand on.”

Our ever-popular Open Stage is making a return this summer on July 20th!

SHHH!! Ensemble
On July 21st, we are thrilled to have percussionist Zac Pulak and pianist Edana Higham, the SHHH!! Ensemble, described as “truly virtuosic and intense” (Confluence Concerts) and “a beautiful discovery” by the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec. Their appetite for collaboration and experimentation has led to bold new works written for them by John Beckwith, Frank Horvat, Jocelyn Morlock, Mari Alice Conrad, Monica Pearce and more.
In February 2023, SHHH!! Ensemble “enthralled” (Winnipeg Free Press) as soloists in the world premiere of Kelly-Marie Murphy’s concerto “Machines, Mannequins, and Monsters” with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Other world premieres include JUNO-winning composer Jocelyn Morlock’s Spirit Gradient with the Tuckamore Festival in Newfoundland, and Noora Nakhei’s “Echoes of the Past” for the Ottawa International Literary Festival. Across the country, their performances at the Open Ears Festival, LUMINA, the Tuckamore Festival, Ottawa Chamberfest, the Banff Centre, and for the National Arts Centre captivate audiences and critics with their “avant-accessible” approach, calling them “inspiring” and “inventive”.
